Medicare covers the Initial Preventive Physical Examination, and a yearly checkup called the Annual Wellness visit that are considered preventative and wellness exams.
Most private insurance plans cover yearly physical exams. Coverage may differ based on enrollment in a Medicare Supplemental Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan.
When receiving a yearly physical exam, here are some things to expect. according to Webmd.com.
Vital signs: Your doctor will check your blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate and temperature.
General appearance: From the minute you walk in the door and greet the doctors, they’re watching you. Do you look healthy? Can you move easily and well? Can you answer questions quickly? Your appearance says a lot about your health.
Heart and lung exams: The doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your heart and lungs. They are listening for any abnormalities that could signal diseases.
Head and neck exam: The physician will look at your tonsils, teeth, gums, ears, sinuses, eyes, lymph nodes, thyroid, and carotid arteries to gain a sense of your overall quality of health.
Abdominal exam: The doctor might tap on your abdomen to listen for signs of fluid or to check the size of your liver. They might also be looking for tender spots.
Neurological exam: Your doctor might ask you to press against their palm. No, they don’t want to arm wrestle; they want to gauge your strength. They might also check your reflexes by tapping on your knees and elbows.
Laboratory tests
Bloodwork is necessary to check for blood cell counts, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, to name a few.
If you’re overweight or have any risk factors for diabetes, your blood sugar may be checked, especially once you turn 45.
Make a list
Make the most of your visit with the physician by taking along a list of questions and concerns. This will ensure you don’t forget anything important and that you get through the physical in a timely manner.
Anticipate the questions the doctor will ask, such as whether your health has changed since he last saw you. Are there any new illnesses in close family members? Be ready to discuss your medical history and current lifestyle.
Add to your list the medications you are taking, including any over-the-counter multivitamins or supplements.
Just as importantly, make sure you have a Medicare health plan that helps you accomplish healthy living and provides the best medical coverage. The experienced team at UROne Benefits® can help you find the right Medicare plan for your needs.
