Understanding Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: Make the Most of Your Coverage Review

As we begin a new year, Medicare beneficiaries should take note of a significant opportunity: the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP). From January 1 to March 31, this window allows those currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan to make changes to their healthcare coverage. If you’re considering switching plans, returning to Original Medicare, or just exploring your options, now is the time to act.

UROne Benefits® is here to help. Schedule a meeting with us or call today to review your current coverage and ensure you’re getting the most out of your plan.

What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period differs from the Annual Election Period (October 15–December 7). During MA OEP, individuals enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1 can:

  1. Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without prescription drug coverage)
  2. Drop their Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B), with the option to enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan

However, this period does not allow switching from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage or adding Part D coverage if you’re not already enrolled.

Why Consider Making a Change?

Life evolves, and so do your healthcare needs. Here are a few reasons why you might want to reassess your coverage during this period:

  • Plan dissatisfaction: Your current plan might no longer meet your needs due to changes in coverage, network limitations, or other factors.
  • Healthcare needs: A new diagnosis, updated prescriptions, or planned medical procedures might make a different plan more suitable.
  • Financial considerations: You might find a plan with lower premiums, deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs that fits your budget better.

How UROne Benefits® Can Help You During MA OEP

Navigating the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Our experienced team at UROne Benefits® can simplify the process for you:

  2. Compare options: We’ll explore plans tailored to your specific healthcare and financial needs, ensuring you make the most informed choice.
  3. Verify details: We’ll confirm that your preferred doctors, specialists, and pharmacies are in-network and that your medications are covered.
  4. Submit changes: If you decide to make a switch, we’ll guide you through the enrollment process to ensure your changes are completed by the March 31 deadline.

Key Points to Remember

  • You can only make one change: Be thoughtful, as your decision will affect your coverage for the rest of the year.
  • No penalties for changes: There are no late enrollment penalties for adjustments made during MA OEP if you meet eligibility requirements.
  • Enhance Original Medicare: If you choose to return to Original Medicare, consider a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help cover out-of-pocket costs. We can help you explore these options as well.
